47 GMC Maintenance Statistics: Service Intervals, Schedules and Repair Context

These 47 GMC maintenance statistics combine manufacturer-recommended service intervals with broader U.S. recall, vehicle-mix and repair-economics measures. Manual schedules are recommendations, not observed owner behavior or average repair frequency.

Key GMC Maintenance Statistics

The most useful figures span routine service, mileage-based components, severe-duty diesel schedules and broader industry context:

  • In the 2025 U.S. GMC Sierra/Sierra Denali 1500 schedule, 7,500 miles (12,000 km) is the normal oil-level, oil-life and oil/filter service interval.

GMC oil and routine service intervals

The 2025 Sierra and Yukon schedules align on a 7,500-mile normal oil-service benchmark, while time limits and dashboard alerts provide separate controls.

Vehicle or condition Service figure Scope
2025 Sierra normal oil/filter service 7,500 miles (12,000 km) U.S. Sierra/Sierra Denali 1500
2025 Sierra annual maximum 1 year Even if the oil-life system has not called
2025 Sierra accidental reset 3,000 miles (5,000 km) From the last service
2025 Yukon normal oil/filter service 7,500 miles (12,000 km) U.S. Yukon/Yukon XL/Denali
2025 Yukon annual maximum 12 months Independent of mileage
2025 Yukon accidental reset 3,000 miles (5,000 km) After the last oil change

For older Acadia and diesel instructions, the alert-based limits are shorter:

  • The 2018 GMC Acadia manual says an oil-change alert should be followed by service within 600 miles (1,000 km).
  • If the Acadia oil-life display is reset accidentally, service is due within 3,000 miles (5,000 km) of the previous service.
  • When a 2021 Duramax displays CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON, oil and filter service is due within 600 miles (1,000 km).

GMC filters, plugs and cooling-system data

The 2025 Sierra and Yukon share the same cabin-filter and coolant timing, but engine and drivetrain items vary by configuration.

Maintenance item Sierra 1500 Yukon
Passenger-compartment filter 22,500 miles (36,000 km) or 24 months 22,500 miles (36,000 km) or 24 months
Spark plugs 60,000 miles (96,000 km) for 2.7L L4; 97,500 miles (156,000 km) for 5.3L/6.2L V8 97,500 miles (156,000 km)
Coolant drain-and-fill 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or 6 years 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or 6 years
Transfer case 100,000 miles (161,000 km) for 4WD 97,500 miles (156,000 km) for 4WD

Each “or” interval is whichever comes first. Dust, pollution, allergens, heavy traffic and poor air quality can require more frequent cabin-filter service; the Sierra manual also notes contaminated transfer-case fluid may require earlier service.

The 2021 Duramax schedule adds diesel-specific component intervals:

  • Without an air-filter-life system, engine air-filter replacement is scheduled at 60,000 miles (96,000 km).
  • In severe service, automatic-transmission-fluid and filter changes are listed at 45,000, 90,000 and 135,000 miles.
  • Severe-service cooling-system drain-and-fill is scheduled at 150,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first.
  • Accessory-drive-belt inspection is scheduled at 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.
  • Oil-pump-belt replacement is scheduled at 150,000 miles or 15 years, whichever comes first.

GMC mileage and time-based maintenance schedules

Some maintenance items use mileage, others use time, and some use both. The 2025 Yukon and Sierra each schedule hood/body lift-support gas-strut replacement at 100,000 miles (161,000 km) or 10 years.

The 2018 Acadia schedules tire rotation and required services every 7,500 miles (12,000 km). The 2025 Sierra and Yukon both specify 22,500 miles for the cabin filter and 150,000 miles or six years for coolant, providing cross-model schedule comparisons rather than population averages.

GMC severe-duty and Duramax maintenance data

The 2021 3.0L Duramax supplement lists 20 normal-service checkpoints from 7,500 through 150,000 miles in 7,500-mile increments. Its severe-service table also spans 20 checkpoints from 7,500 through 150,000 miles, but severe-use conditions change the component timing.

Fuel-filter replacement in the severe schedule appears at 30,000, 60,000, 90,000, 120,000 and 150,000 miles. The manual allows earlier service based on use or the dashboard message.

For extended idling, the manual counts 1 hour as 33 miles (53 km) for maintenance purposes. This is a maintenance-equivalence rule, not actual road distance traveled or an observed commercial-use average.

NHTSA’s figures are all-make, all-equipment totals, so they do not measure GMC routine maintenance, GMC-specific repair incidence or recall completion.

Calendar year Total recalls Affected vehicles
2024 1,073 35,000,618
2023 1,000 39,783,137
2022 1,050 32,141,648
2021 1,093 34,804,228
2020 883 56,228,619

In 2024, NHTSA recorded 800 defect recalls affecting 25,178,523 vehicles and 273 compliance recalls affecting 9,822,095 vehicles. Across 2004–2024, the report records 17,629 total recalls affecting 765,330,867 vehicles.

GMC vehicle mix, efficiency and repair economics

EPA’s industry measures provide context for GMC trucks and SUVs but are not GMC sales, maintenance or owner-cost statistics.

  • In model year 2024, 66% of U.S. new vehicles were classified as trucks under NHTSA regulations and 34% as cars.
  • Average U.S. truck-SUV fuel economy reached 25.7 mpg in model year 2024, up 1.0 mpg from 2023.
  • In model year 2024, 4% of truck SUVs were battery-electric vehicles and 4% were plug-in hybrids.
  • EPA estimates truck-SUV fuel economy was 1.0 mpg higher in 2024 because of BEV and PHEV adoption.
  • EPA says 2024 average new-vehicle real-world fuel economy would have been 1.7 mpg lower without BEVs and PHEVs.
  • An EPA estimate associated with the finalized 2024 standards puts annual net benefits at nearly $100 billion, including fuel and maintenance/repair savings.
  • The same release estimates $62 billion per year in reduced fuel costs and maintenance and repair costs for drivers; the amount is not separable into GMC maintenance costs.
